1670s - Spanish authorities attempt to control Guam.
1688 - Smallpox epidemic in Guam.
1767 - English and French marines begin to trade with the islands of Tahiti.
1770 - James Cook approaches Australia and charts it.
1778 - British fleet arrives at Sydney with 1000 passengers, 800 were convicts. Established European settlement.
1778 - Captain James Cook discovers Hawaiian Islands.
1779 - Captain James Cook dies.
